The Greenly Boot in Action & History – this article includes an exclusive property for sale
Mr William Lobb would like to convey a big thank you to an old customer of ours who very kindly invited me to hunt at the Dorchester Shooting Preserve in Georgia, to shoot quail whilst on my recent trip to the USA. He has invited me for a few years now. For those of you that own a pair of Greenly boots or enjoy hunting, you may be interested to know that we made a fine pair of Greenly boots as shown in the photos below. The first time I went hunting with this customer, we had just made him these boots and I was able to see them in action first hand!
Previously used almost exclusively by the Royal Artillery, these boots were made for many other regiments when war broke out in 1939. The three straps fasten the leg over a folded “bellows” tongue, a piece of whalebone being sewn into the front of the boots to prevent gaping. These straps, together with the laced throat, enable the boots to be put on or taken off quickly and easily. For the man with a large calf its advantages are obvious. For the civilian it makes a workmanlike field boot for either riding or walking. This information has been taken from our black and white printed catalogue which we have reproduced on our website.
This catalogue has information about 23 classic styles with the Greenly boot being the last one picture number 23.
This particular customer has had many of our shoes and boots and is a man of discerning taste for the best money can buy. For anyone interested I have offered (and he has agreed!) to my posting a link to his beautiful property for sale in Sea Island, Georgia, USA. This is not far from the Dorchester Shooting Preserve. Details of the property can be viewed on Christie’s International Real Estate site.
Sea Island has been known as an exceptional destination ever since 1928, with the opening of the beautiful Cloister Hotel. With four Forbes Five-Star experiences — The Cloister at Sea Island, The Lodge at Sea Island, The Spa at Sea Island, and the Georgian Room restaurant – Sea Island entices families, outdoor enthusiasts, and those simply wanting to refresh. It is the only resort in the world to have received four Forbes Five-Star awards for ten consecutive years. As the only U.S. resort to host a G-8 Summit of world leaders, Sea Island provides exceptional settings and service for conferences and executive retreats.
Located on the south eastern coast of Georgia, Sea Island features five miles of private beach, a Beach Club, tennis centre, Yacht Club, Shooting School, and children’s programmes, as well as three championship golf courses, including Seaside and Plantation, home of the PGA TOUR’s RSM Classic. Broadfield, a Sea Island Sporting Club and Lodge, offers seasonal hunting and fishing opportunities.
The property for sale is not part of the resort but is a private property nearby and the resort gives you a good idea as to the area the property is located in. If you wish to have further information please contact me at our shop in St James’s Street or by emailing me directly at email@example.com
